Day Tour to Iximche, Guatemala

Founded around 1470 AD, Iximche served as the capital of the Kaqchikel Kingdom — one of the most powerful Maya political entities in the late pre-Hispanic period. The site sits at approximately 2,200 meters above sea level on a natural plateau formed by the confluence of two deep ravines, a strategic position that made it nearly impossible to attack from below and gave the Kaqchikel an exceptional defensive advantage over rival kingdoms including the K’iche’ Maya to the north.

At its peak, Iximche was home to several thousand people and served as the political, religious, and ceremonial center of the Kaqchikel state. The site contains four main plazas, multiple ceremonial temple platforms, two ball courts, and numerous palace structures — all built in the distinctive architectural style of the late Maya Postclassic period.

Iximche holds a particularly significant place in Guatemalan history for two additional reasons. In 1524, Spanish conquistador Pedro de Alvarado established the first capital of colonial Guatemala at Iximche — making it simultaneously the last Maya capital and the first Spanish capital of the region. And today, Iximche remains an active sacred site for contemporary Kaqchikel Maya communities, who regularly conduct traditional ceremonies at the site’s altars — a living connection between ancient and modern Maya culture that is rare to witness anywhere in the world.
