Most people hike Pacaya Volcano. You ride it.

This private ATV adventure takes you through the volcanic slopes of Pacaya on exclusive off-road trails — black sand curves, petrified lava fields, and private ranchlands that the standard hiking tour never reaches. No national park crowds, no shared trail. Just you, the volcano, and 4 hours of open terrain on an automatic ATV that anyone can handle from the first minute.

At $199 per person, this is Cyman Travel’s most adrenaline-forward experience — and the only Pacaya ATV tour in Guatemala that includes a professional paramedic on route.

What Makes This ATV Tour Different

There are other ATV tours near Pacaya. Here is what sets this one apart:

  • 100% private route — the entire tour runs on private fincas and ranchos, not on the public national park trails. You get unobstructed views, no crowds, and access to landscapes that standard tours never visit
  • Professional paramedic on route — a certified paramedic accompanies every departure. No other Pacaya ATV tour in Antigua offers this
  • Automatic ATVs with full safety induction — no prior ATV experience required. Every rider receives a complete safety briefing before departure
  • Rancho Piedras Negras stop — an exclusive private ranch where you meet Spanish thoroughbred horses, ostriches, exotic birds, and farm animals — a genuinely unexpected highlight that riders consistently mention in reviews
  • Agro-tour included — a guided stop through local avocado farms and biodiversity routes that gives context to the volcanic landscape beyond just the adrenaline

The Route — What You Actually Do

Departure from Antigua

Your private transport picks you up from your hotel in Antigua at 6:00 AM (morning option) or 12:00 PM (afternoon option). The drive to the Pacaya area takes approximately 90 minutes through the Guatemalan highlands.

ATV Adventure — 4 Hours on the Volcano

The ATV tour runs for approximately 4 hours across the private volcanic terrain surrounding Pacaya. Your route covers:

  • Off-road volcanic trails — rural paths through black sand curves and all-terrain hillside routes that circle the volcano’s private slopes
  • Petrified lava fields — you stop, dismount, and walk through ancient solidified lava flows up close. The scale of what a single Pacaya eruption created underfoot is hard to grasp until you’re standing in the middle of it
  • Rancho Piedras Negras — the private ranch stop. Spanish thoroughbred horses, ostriches, exotic birds, and interactive farm animals. A 20-minute detour that most riders end up calling their favorite part of the day
  • Avocado and biodiversity agro-tour — a guided walk through the local agricultural landscape with context on the volcanic soil’s role in Guatemala’s food production

The entire route is on private land — no national park entrance required, no shared trails with hiking groups, no traffic from other tour operators. The volcanic landscape you ride through is genuinely exclusive to this experience.

Return to Antigua

Your private transport returns you to Antigua at approximately 2:00 PM (morning departure) or 8:00 PM (afternoon departure).

Is This Tour Right for You?

This tour is designed for travelers who want something beyond the standard Antigua experience — people who came to Guatemala for adventure, not just colonial architecture. You do not need ATV experience. You do not need to be an experienced hiker. You need to be comfortable on a motorized vehicle and open to 4 hours of volcanic terrain that looks genuinely unlike anywhere else on Earth.

If you’re debating between the standard Pacaya hiking tour and this ATV experience: the hiking tour gives you access to the active national park and the lava flows. The ATV tour gives you private terrain, more ground covered, no crowds, and an experience that is significantly harder to replicate on your own. Both are excellent — they’re just different days.

If you want both: do the ATV tour on one day and the standard Pacaya hike ($35/person) on another. We operate both daily from Antigua.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. All ATVs are automatic and designed for easy handling. Every rider receives a complete safety induction before the tour departs. Riders with no prior ATV experience complete this tour successfully every day.

Minimum age is 18 years old to drive an ATV. Children under 18 may ride as passengers with an adult driver. Contact us to confirm availability for mixed-age groups.

No. The entire route runs on 100% private fincas and ranchos surrounding Pacaya Volcano — not inside the national park. This is what allows exclusive access to terrain that public tours never reach, and eliminates the national park entrance fee from your costs.

Yes. A certified paramedic accompanies every single Cyman Travel Pacaya ATV departure — morning and afternoon. This is a standard inclusion, not an optional add-on.

The Pacaya hiking tour ($35/person) follows the national park trail on foot to the active lava fields — a moderate 2-hour hike. The ATV tour ($199/person) covers private terrain off the national park on motorized vehicles, includes the Rancho Piedras Negras stop, and covers significantly more ground in a different type of experience. Many travelers do both on separate days.

The ATV tour runs for approximately 8 hours total including transport. Booking two in one day is not feasible. If you want to do multiple activities, contact us via WhatsApp and we'll build a multi-day itinerary around the ATV tour.

The tour operates in light rain — volcanic terrain is still rideable and the experience remains excellent. In case of heavy rain or unsafe conditions, our guides make the call to pause or modify the route. Contact us via WhatsApp 24 hours before your departure and we can advise on expected conditions for your date.

We recommend booking at least 48 hours in advance to guarantee your preferred departure time. Contact us via WhatsApp at +502 3468-0911 and we confirm availability immediately.
