After months of suspension, the Acatenango 4×4 route has been officially reopened with new regulations. Cyman Travel is one of the first authorized operators to resume departures.

Most people who dream of Acatenango give up before they start — not because of the views, but because of the hike. The standard trail from La Soledad gains over 1,500 meters of elevation and takes 5 to 6 hours just to reach base camp. The 4×4 tour changes that completely.
Cyman Travel’s Acatenango 4×4 departs Antigua in a fully equipped off-road vehicle and drives you up a private farm road through Finca San Sebastián, cutting approximately 3.5 hours off the standard hiking approach and dropping you significantly higher on the volcano. From the drop-off point, it’s roughly 2 hours of hiking to base camp — manageable for almost anyone in reasonable shape — where you arrive with energy to spare and a full night of Volcán de Fuego eruptions ahead of you.
This is the same base camp, the same views, the same Fuego erupting every 20 minutes through the night. Just a far more accessible way to get there.

Why the 4x4 Route Changes Everything
The standard Acatenango hiking route starts at La Soledad (approximately 2,400 meters above sea level) and climbs to base camp at around 3,700 meters — a grueling 1,300-meter elevation gain that takes most groups 5 to 6 hours and leaves them exhausted before the real experience even begins.
The 4×4 route uses the private road through Finca San Sebastián to drive you directly to a point significantly higher on the volcano. From the vehicle drop-off, you hike approximately 2 hours to base camp with minimal elevation gain. You arrive fresh, have time to settle in, eat a warm meal, and watch the sunset before Fuego begins its nightly eruption show.
This isn’t a shortcut that diminishes the experience. It’s a different access point to the same extraordinary place — one that makes Acatenango genuinely accessible to people who want the volcano experience without requiring elite athletic conditioning.
Tour Itinerary
Day 1 — Antigua to Acatenango Base Camp
8:00 AM — Hotel pickup in Antigua Guatemala
Your 4×4 picks you up directly from your hotel in Antigua. Departure is sharp at 8:00 AM — punctuality is essential as the group departs together.
Off-road drive through Finca San Sebastián
The 4×4 takes you through neighboring highland towns before turning onto the private farm road that climbs the lower slopes of Acatenango. The drive itself is an experience — volcanic terrain, cloud forest views, and highland agricultural landscapes. This route is not accessible to standard vehicles and is the only authorized motorized access to upper Acatenango.
4×4 drop-off and hike to base camp (~2 hours)
The vehicle drops you at the authorized access point on the upper slopes. From here, a 2-hour hike through cloud forest leads to base camp at approximately 3,700 meters above sea level. Your guide sets the pace and provides information about the volcano’s history, geology, and the local communities throughout the ascent.
Afternoon / Evening — Base camp and Fuego eruptions
Upon arrival at camp, your guide assigns you to your shared cabin and serves a warm meal. As darkness falls, Fuego begins its nightly show — lava fountains rising 200 to 300 meters above the crater, pyroclastic material rolling down the ravines, the orange glow visible for dozens of kilometers in every direction. From Acatenango’s base camp, you are approximately 7 kilometers from Fuego’s active crater — close enough to feel the pressure waves of major explosions, far enough to be completely safe.

Day 2 — Summit Attempt and Return
4:00 AM — Summit push (optional but strongly recommended)
Your guide wakes the group before dawn for the summit attempt. From base camp to the summit at 3,976 meters takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours of steep, loose-volcanic-terrain climbing. It is hard. The summit, on clear days, reveals one of the most spectacular panoramas in Central America — the Pacific coast visible to the south, the Guatemalan highlands to the north, and Fuego erupting below you as the sun rises through the cloud layer.
Morning — Descent and 4×4 return to Antigua
After the summit (or sunrise at base camp for those who opt out), the group descends back to the 4×4 drop-off point and boards the vehicle for the return drive to Antigua. Estimated arrival back in the city is late morning.

The 4x4 drives you up through Finca San Sebastián's private road, cutting approximately 3.5 hours of uphill hiking off the standard route. Instead of a 5–6 hour climb to base camp, you hike approximately 2 hours from the vehicle drop-off point. The base camp, the Fuego views, and the optional summit push are identical — the 4x4 is simply a far more accessible way to reach the same extraordinary place.
Yes — with reasonable fitness. The 2-hour hike from the 4x4 drop-off to base camp involves some elevation gain on uneven terrain, but is significantly less demanding than the 5–6 hour standard approach. The summit push on Day 2 is optional; you can stay at base camp for sunrise if you prefer.
Current regulations governing the Finca San Sebastián access road restrict authorized vehicle access to Monday through Thursday. This restriction applies to all operators without exception. Cyman Travel cannot offer weekend 4x4 departures under the current regulatory framework.
The previous $295 price was based on a 1:00 PM departure that is no longer in operation. The current tour departs at 8:00 AM, includes new logistics, and operates under updated route regulations. The $315 price reflects the complete 2-day/1-night experience including all included items listed above.
Yes. An optional hike from Acatenango's base camp to the authorized Fuego viewpoint takes approximately 1.5 hours each way and costs Q200 per person additionally. Your guide will advise on conditions on the day. Note this is separate from the Acatenango summit push — both are optional.
Acatenango operates year-round, including during the rainy season (May–October). Rain is possible, particularly in the afternoon. Even with cloud cover, the eruption glow and sound of Fuego at night remain impressive. Cyman Travel will communicate any weather-related changes directly via WhatsApp before your departure.
